Catholic Church Takes Control of .catholic Domain

The Vatican has announced its control of the .catholic domain which raises important implications for the role of authority on online contexts. The Vatican was approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which coordinates the assignment of Internet domain names and addresses around the world.

Officials report that control of the domain, both those in english and other languages, allows leadership to present a more cohesive agenda.

Catholic bloggers will not be given a space in which to discuss their faith. Control and access will be limited to those with formal canonical recognition, which could be seen as a way to maintain the hierarchical system of power and control in online and offline contexts.
