Bio Statement: 
Kathryn Montalbano is a Ph.D. candidate in communications at Columbia University. Her research examines religion, media, and culture; government surveillance of religious groups in the United States, historically and today; communication history; and media policy. She is also interested in the use of communication technologies by religious institutions, and the covering of religion in print and broadcast journalism. Her academic work is shaped by policy research on secrecy and national security at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law, and on Internet policy at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. Prior to entering the Ph.D. program at Columbia, Montalbano received her B.A. in English literature and sociology at Haverford College in 2009.
